Prerequisites

To apply for PMP certification you must meet one of the education and experience paths below. All project management experience must have been gained within the last 10 years, in a professional setting, before you submit your application.

  • Upper-secondary / secondary school completion (e.g. high school diploma or equivalent)
  • Minimum 60 months / 5 years of non-overlapping experience leading projects
  • Recognised associate's-level, higher-certificate or advanced technical/vocational programme
  • Minimum 48 months / 4 years of non-overlapping experience leading projects
  • Bachelor's degree or higher (or a formally mapped equivalent qualification)
  • Minimum 36 months / 3 years of non-overlapping experience leading projects
  • Bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a PMI GAC-accredited programme
  • Minimum 24 months / 2 years of non-overlapping experience leading projects

Every path also requires at least 35 hours of project management training aligned to the PMP Exam Content Outline. An active CAPM certification waives that requirement, and GAC coursework can count toward it.

  • APPLICATION PROCESS
  • Gather your application materials.

Document your experience related to past projects and training. Below are some examples to help guide you through your documentation process:

  • Projects you've led
  • Where you've worked, your role and responsibilities, duration of projects
  • Training you've completed
  • Institutions attended, courses completed, qualifying hours
  • Additional tips
  • Remember to register a PMI.org user account before moving forward with your application.
  • Don't miss any requirements with the application checklist.
  • Take your time. The application is save-as-you-go, so you can take a break if needed.
  • Remember to focus on your role and responsibilities for the project, not as much on the project itself.
