DoD 8140 Training & Certification FAQs
For expert training, consider the industry leader:
The best training programs focus on industry-recognized certifications mapped to specific 8140/Cyberspace Workforce Framework (DCWF) work roles (e.g., IAT, IAM, IASAE). Certifications frequently targeted include:
- CompTIA: Security+, CySA+, SecurityX
- ISC2: CISSP, SSCP
- EC-Council: Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Certified Network Defense (CND)
- ISACA: CISM, CISA
Many reputable providers offer online courses, including live virtual classroom instruction, on-demand/self-paced e-learning, and boot camps. Companies like Applied Technology Academy, offers online training options for DoD 8140 compliance, often focusing on the approved baseline certifications like CompTIA Security+ or CISSP.
Accredited training is typically provided by organizations that are official training partners of the certification bodies (e.g., CompTIA, ISC2, EC-Council) whose certifications are approved for 8140. Applied Technology Academy is ranked as an award winning training provider by these vendors.
The cost varies significantly based on the certification level, provider, and format (e.g., live boot camp vs. self-paced e-learning).
- Instructor-Led Courses: Public, instructor-led courses for core certifications like CompTIA Security+ or CASP+ can range from approximately $2,200 to over $4,000 for a 5-day session, often including the exam voucher.
- Self-Paced Courses: Self-paced/e-learning options are generally lower cost, sometimes ranging from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars.
Reviews often highlight instructors' expertise and the comprehensiveness of the training materials. For example, Applied Technology Academy receives positive feedback, specifically citing their Master Certified Instructors, engaging teaching styles, and success in preparing students for exams like CEH and CISSP on the first attempt.
To enroll:
- Identify Your Work Role: Determine your specific DoD Cyberspace Workforce Framework (DCWF) work role and the corresponding required baseline certification (e.g., IAT Level II requires Security+).
- Search Providers: Search websites of providers like Applied Technology Academy or Certstaffix Training for classes in your location or for their live online schedules.
- Choose Format: Decide between instructor-led live online, onsite for corporate teams, or self-paced options.
- Register: Contact the training provider to register and discuss payment/funding options.
DoD 8140 is a framework; the **syllabus** is determined by the specific baseline certification you pursue (e.g., CompTIA Security+, CISSP). A standard syllabus for an entry-to-mid-level certification like **CompTIA Security+** (a common IAT Level II certification) typically covers:
- Threats, Attacks, and Vulnerabilities
- Architecture and Design
- Implementation
- Operations and Incident Response
- Governance, Risk, and Compliance
While full, immersive 8140 certification training courses (e.g., CompTIA Security+ boot camps) are typically delivered through live virtual classes or desktop e-learning platforms, you can use **mobile apps** for supplementary study. Many certification bodies and third-party vendors offer mobile flashcards, practice exam questions, and study guides for the approved baseline certifications, which helps reinforce the core concepts on the go.
Yes, there are a few options, particularly for DoD employees and affiliates:
- CISA Learning (formerly FedVTE): This is a free, government-wide resource for cybersecurity training, replacing the Federal Virtual Training Environment.
- Joint Knowledge Online (JKO): DoD employees with JKO access may find free, self-paced courses, particularly for foundational and intermediate DCWF work roles.
- Military Funding: Active duty and veterans can often use military programs like the GI Bill or MOS-specific funding (e.g., Marine Corps COOL) to cover the full cost of training and exams, effectively making it **free** to the individual.

What is DoDD 8140 Mandate?
The updated DoD 8140 Qualification Program, implemented in 2023, provides a comprehensive approach to managing cyber workforce talent. It establishes baseline standards for qualifications that directly support operational needs and workforce readiness. It expands on 8570 to leverage the Defense Cybersecurity Workforce Framework (DCWF), which draws from the original National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Cybersecurity Workforce Framework (NCWF) and the DoD Joint Cyberspace Training and Certification Standards (JCT&CS). The DoD 8570.01 – DoD is transitioning from the IA workforce to the Cybersecurity Workforce.
With the expansion of the DoD 8140 Cyber Workforce Qualification Program, around 225,000 military, civilian, and contractor positions will have foundational and residential qualification criteria for each DoD Cyber Workforce Framework role. These roles align with our GIAC cybersecurity focus areas, including Cyber Defense, Forensics, Management, Cloud, and Offensive Operations, offering options that equip individuals with real-world skills and testing. This strategy and program aim to enable the DoD to develop and deploy an agile, capable, and ready cyber workforce.
